Mamata Baneriee is unnecessarily making Panchayet election a prestige issue. She's locked horn over the number of phases Panchayet polls would be held with the State Election Commission(SEC).SCE suggests polls would be held in three phases while Mamata initially insited on single phase election and now has conceded to go in for two-phase polls. There's another bone of contention between two sides.SCE wants central forces be deployed along with state forces to maintain law and order during polls while Mamata suggests state forces alone are enough to tackle law and order situation. She feels law and order situation in the state at present is quite good and it does not warrant deployment of Central forces at the time Panchayet election. Both sides have stayed put to their respective stance and it's difficult to say how the issue would be ultimately resolved. Many feel the issue might be dragged to court for judicial intervention.
Though the state reserves the right to suggest how and when Panchayet polls would be held ,but it is SCE that conducts the polls. They better know how the election could be run smoothly and peacefully in the prevailing circumstances of the state and also measures and precautions need be taken on this count. In case of large scale disturbances during polls blames would laid at the door of SCE.So they should be given free hand to conduct the polls the way they deem fit.State govt would only extend all-out cooperation to SCE to make polls a grand success. So state should stay away from any sort of confrontation with SCE.
